Paleogeographic reconstruction of regional accretionary complex architecture, Franciscan Complex, northwestern San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA

چکیده

Abstract The Franciscan Complex of western California, USA, the archetypal subduction accretionary complex, cannot serve as a model complex unless its local-to-regional architecture is clearly understood. Yet, architectural details are not understood in many regions, including northwestern San Francisco Bay Area. Here, Cenozoicage, dextral strike-slip faulting on faults Andreas System fragmented original architecture, forming crustal blocks and juxtaposing fragments rock different tectonostratigraphy. One little-known Cenozoicage fault block boundary, Tamarancho Shear Zone, separates northeastern that dominated by rocks from southwestern with significantly have abbreviated stacks at least one blueschist-facies unit, whereas lack units either westward-and-downward–younging tectonostratigraphy or thrustsheet composed partial sequences ocean-plate stratigraphy rocks. Area bounded southwest (sensu stricto) northeast Petaluma Valley–Point Richmond–Silver Creek fault. Using paleogeographic reconstruction, can be partially reconstructed removing separations enhanced unfolding Cenozoic folds. Accretionary were originally assembled ~190 km southeast their present locations, west southern Diablo Range. Reconstruction location considerations require Novato Block, located Mt. Tamalpais to southwest, separated along across strike complex. Either dual zone faulted plate geometries produced segment each highlights possibilities along- across-strike variations structure history

A regional mass balance of methylmercury in San Francisco Bay, California, USA.

The San Francisco Bay (California, USA) is a water body listed as impaired because of Hg contamination in sport fish for human consumption, as well as possible effects on resident wildlife. A legacy of Hg mining in local watersheds and Hg used in Au mining in the Sierra Nevada (USA) has contributed to contamination seen in the bay, with additional more recent and ongoing inputs from various sou...

Estimates of suspended sediment entering San Francisco Bay from the Sacramento and San Joaquin Delta, San Francisco Bay, California

This study demonstrates the use of suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) data collected at Mallard Island as a means of determining suspended-sediment load entering San Francisco Bay from the Sacramento and San Joaquin River watersheds. Optical backscatter (OBS) data were collected every 15 min during water years (WYs) 1995–2003 and converted to SSC. Daily fluvial advective sediment load was e...

Autogeny in Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes from the San Francisco Bay Area.

We surveyed the genetic ancestry and recorded the occurrence of autogeny, the developmental times, and survival rates in families of Culex pipiens in Santa Clara County, CA, at 37°N latitude. Females in 95% of the families produced fertile egg rafts without access to blood (= autogeny) after mating in stenogamous conditions. Developmental time, survival, and egg raft production were closely cor...

Evolution of a new ecotype of Spartina alterniflora (Poaceae) in San Francisco Bay, California, USA.

We report the discovery and spread of a dwarf ecotype of Spartina alterniflora in San Francisco Bay. Relative to typical S. alterniflora, this dwarf ecotype has one-fifth the tiller height (∼21 cm), tenfold the tiller density (∼4000 tillers/m(2)), and is restricted to growth in the upper intertidal zone. Chromosome counts of the dwarfs are identical to typical smooth cordgrass (2n = 62), and sm...

Mercury correlations among six tissues for four waterbird species breeding in San Francisco Bay, California, USA.

Despite a large body of research concerning mercury (Hg) in birds, no single tissue has been used consistently to assess Hg exposure, and this has hampered comparisons across studies. We evaluated the relationships of Hg concentrations among tissues in four species of waterbirds (American avocets [Recurvirostra americana], black-necked stilts [Himantopus mexicanus], Caspian terns [Hydroprogne c...
